DBasia.news – Danny Murphy, a former Liverpool star, believes Graham Potter can win trophies at Chelsea, but admits he is expecting a big challenge at Stamford Bridge following his move from Brighton.
Potter was inaugurated as Chelsea’s new manager on Thursday (8/9), shortly after the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel which shocked the English football scene.
The Blues have only won half of all their matches in the Premier League this season and were defeated by Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday (6/9).
Tuchel was removed from his post, although poor results were not the only reason, and now Potter has been appointed to save Chelsea’s season.
Prior to his appointment, Potter was having a great season with Brighton with the Seagulls currently sitting fourth in the Premier League.
Former Liverpool player, Murphy also believes he can continue his achievements at Stamford Bridge, but cautions about the “ego” of the star players in west London.
“No English manager has won a major trophy since Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth in 2008 but Potter has the coaching skills and the players to finish that run and bring the trophy to Stamford Bridge,” Murphy told the Daily Mail.
“Funnily enough, I think transferring the tactical knowledge he showed at Brighton would be relatively easy, and he has the humility and composure that will bring stability to Chelsea.”
“The hard part is dealing with the egos of the star players who will knock on his office door and ask why they weren’t playing.”
“This will be his biggest challenge and something he has to learn quickly. From my experience playing at Liverpool compared to Charlton and Fulham, I know the status of players can be very different. Managers need to communicate and have strong conversations.”
“Most Chelsea players are international stars with trophies on their resumes. It would be more challenging to explain the situation to them than to explain the situation to unhappy players at Ostersunds, Swansea or Brighton.”
“In training, Potter will be fine, his Brighton play great football, and the team also show a different style of play depending on who the opponent is.”
If there is no schedule change following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Potter will make his debut match as Chelsea coach in the Champions League, hosting RB Salzburg on Thursday (15/9).
