DBasia.news – Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana has been suspended for 12 months for failing a doping test, with the club claiming their No.1 goalkeeper accidentally took a drug prescribed for his wife.
These penalties are given directly by UEFA and will apply at all levels of competition. That means, Onana is threatened to miss the Cameroon national team if he qualifies for the African Cup finals in January next year.
Onana is known to have failed a medical test that took place in October 2020. UEFA found a banned substance called Furosemide in the player’s urine.
Ajax responded quickly to the punishment. The Dutch giant strongly defended Onana, who had no intention of using doping.
“On the morning of 30 October, Onana was not feeling well so he wanted to take a pill to relieve his discomfort. However, without realizing it, he was taking Lasimac, a drug prescribed for his wife,” reads an official Ajax statement.
“Onana’s mistake resulted in him taking his wife’s medicine, which ultimately led to this punishment being given by UEFA against the goalkeeper.”
Reporting from Goal, UEFA can accept Onana and Ajax’s reasons. But the European football confederation must enforce the existing rules.
This punishment is very heavy for Onana. Even though his ability had stolen the attention of big clubs like Chelsea to Barcelona.
It is rumored that Ajax will appeal to the sports arbitration court (CAS). De Amsterdammers hopes that Onana’s sentence can be cut short.
