DBasia.news – Marco Asensio has been with Real Madrid since 2014 after being transferred from Mallorca. Within seven years Asensio had loan spells at Mallorca and Espanyol.
The 25-year-old who plays as an attacking midfielder, can also play as a winger, has gone through ups and downs at Madrid with different coaches.
But the fact that Asensio won two LaLiga titles, two Champions Leagues, two European Super Cups, one Spanish Super Cup and three Club World Cups shows that he is a top player in Europe.
Reportedly two clubs from England, Liverpool and Arsenal, are interested in recruiting the services of the player with the Spanish passport. Liverpool legend and former Madrid player Steve McManaman has also followed the rumors.
According to McManaman it would be better for Asensio to go to Arsenal, especially given the aging of Arsenal strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. Asensio could follow in the footsteps of Martin Odegaard who went to Arsenal.
“Marco Asensio hasn’t played enough at Real Madrid,” McManaman said as quoted by Dailymail.
“His reputation was probably better two years ago when he first appeared and scored many beautiful goals, in the Champions League final against Juventus in 2017 in Cardiff and in the Super Cup, a beautiful goal, against Barcelona.”
“But since then he has had an injury and of course Real Madrid is not the team it was four years ago, and the level has dropped.”
“If (he moved to) a club next year, I would say it would be Arsenal. Aubameyang is nearing the end of his career – or he must be in his thirties – and with Lacazette in a similar position and about to end his contract, Asensio could be at a club where he would probably prefer to play.”
“If he leaves in 18 months, it’s still a long way off. But I think he’s the type of Arsenal player, like (Martin) Odegaard, who is good on the ball, doesn’t have to be too fast, but turns well, scores goals and creates chances.”
With Asensio’s playing style that can open up chances and his goal-scoring instinct, Arsenal – if they sign Asensio – will have players who can change the situation of the game.
