DBasia.news – The rumors finally came true. English Premier League club Arsenal have officially signed England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United in the transfer market.
Ramsdale signed from Sheffield United. Arsenal must spend around 24 million pounds to realize this transfer.
Arsenal’s maneuver is quite surprising. That’s because Mikel Arteta’s team already has Bernd Leno as the main goalkeeper.
Arsenal gave Ramsdale a four-year contract. This shows how much hope is placed on the 23-year-old goalkeeper.
This could be a sign that Arteta is starting to doubt Leno’s abilities. The German goalkeeper conceded two goals quite easily when he lost to Brentford last weekend.
But the arrival of Ramsdale can also be positive for Leno. He is expected to be motivated to perform better in every match to secure his position.
Since the departure of Emiliano Martinez, Leno does not have a commensurate competitor. Alex Runarsson’s level as a second goalkeeper is still far behind.
Ramsdale himself has high ambitions after accepting Arsenal’s offer. He wants to immediately seize the position as the number one goalkeeper.
“Bernd (Leno) has done a fantastic job over the last few seasons and I’m here to push completely and pick up the shirt,” Ramsdale told the club’s official website.
“Competition is key and it’s also a great place to be first-choice goalkeeper.”
Ramsdale does have the capital to compete with Leno. He is indeed one of the talented young goalkeepers that England have.
His quality has even been recognized by the England national team coach, Gareth Southgate. He brought the goalkeeper to Euro 2020 even though he was never selected.
