Atalanta Were Defeated against Madrid, Gasperini Blames the Referee

DBasia.news – Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini criticized the referee’s decision, which was considered to be detrimental to his team in the Atalanta vs Real Madrid match. According to him, the referee had destroyed the match.

In the match that took place at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri, Thursday (25/2), Atalanta had to play with ten players from the 17th minute. Remo Freuler was immediately rewarded with a red card after breaking Ferland Mendy in front of the penalty box.

Freuler’s offense really wasn’t that harsh. However, he might be considered by the referee to thwart Mendy’s net chance, who only had to face the goalkeeper even though he was quite far away.

It was this decision that made Gasperini furious. He did not even hesitate to say that the referee had never played football.

“I was just punished in Serie A and if I say something now then UEFA will also punish me for a month. But this is football suicide,” Gasperini told Sky Sport Italia.

“We can’t have a referee who has never played this game and doesn’t know the difference between a tackle and a foul. If they can’t tell the difference, then they have to go and get a different job.”

“The referee also has video replays and all that is needed to judge, but they are still wrong. I’m not complaining about the result, but at least we can play our game,” he added.

It’s natural for Gasperini to be emotional. Playing with ten players made it difficult for his team to develop the game.

Madrid were lucky to only be able to score one goal through Mendy’s shot in the dying minutes. Atalanta at least still has a chance to reverse the position in the second leg.
