DBasia.news – Australia’s top soccer competition, League A, prohibits spectators from attending the match for the rest of the season as part of an effort to stem the spread of the corona virus, the Football Federation Australia (FFA) said on Monday.
Quoted from Reuters, in Jakarta on Monday, local Australian media speculated that the league would be suspended due to travel restrictions by the government which would force two teams, Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne Victory, to undergo quarantine for 14 days, when returning to Australia after their match in New Zealand , Sunday.
But FFA chairman James Johnson said the team’s match would be rescheduled after quarantine and New Zealand-based Wellington agreed to settle in Australia to be allowed continuing the season.
“The decision to play the remainder of the 2019/20 A Hyundai season, and the Westfield W League Grand Final 2020 in private was made after a consultation with the club and in accordance with the latest directions of the Federal Government,” Johnson said in a statement.
There are six rounds remaining in the regular League A season before the playoffs.
The travel restriction policy in New Zealand and Australia has forced the suspension of Super Rugby, a major rugby union competition involving teams from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina and Japan.
