DBasia.news – New Barcelona coach Quique Setien started his career with El Barca with heavy targets. President of Barcelona targets Setien to win treble winners. Setien is considered capable of achieving these targets with his playing patterns.
Quique Setien, 61, was appointed to coach Barcelona shortly after the club sacked Ernesto Valverde. The dismissal came after Barcelona was eliminated by Atletico Madrid in the semifinals of the Spanish Super Cup with a score of 2-3.
The emergence of Setien as Barcelona coach was a surprise because previously Barca was associated with Xavi Hernandez, Mauricio Pochettino, and Ronald Koeman. Setien has not trained since leaving Real Betis in 2019.
Barcelona is currently still competing for the title LaLiga, Champions League and Copa del Rey. In a press conference session, Bartomeu thanked Valverde for everything he had given to the club. In addition, Bartomeu also hopes that Setien can present treble winners this season.
“The dynamics of the team can be improved. We are in the next round of the Champions League and the Copa is just starting, but we feel the dynamics can be improved,” Bartomeu said as quoted by Goal.
“We have discussed this many times with Valverde, very open with him and we are always very close to Ernesto Valverde with good relations and always talk about what can be improved.”
“With this momentum and with this new dynamic, we aspire to win La Liga, the Champions League and the Cup (Copa del Rey),” said Bartomeu.
Furthermore, Bartomeu also explained the reasons for choosing Quique Setien as the new coach, even though his coaching career was relatively mediocre without trophy achievement. Bartomeu assessed Setien’s football philosophy, which admires Barca legend Johan Cruyff, in accordance with the club’s identity.
“We all know Setien really admires Johan Cruyff’s playing style and we share the same goals,” Bartomeu added.
Added by Eric Abidal, Barca’s Sports Director, the club chose Setien because of the way he communicated with the players and also his coaching methods.
“Having him (Setien) here is a great pleasure for us. He is a coach who has shown (his quality) through the teams he has trained (and) he has great abilities,” added Abidal.
“What I like the most is the communication he has with his players, how to work, how to train him.”
“He always focuses on details. To compete at the highest level, the detail is very important, whether it is in the league, tournament, or the Champions League,” concluded the man from France.
