DBasia.news – Former Barcelona technical director Eric Abidal has stated that he failed to make Barca a better managed football club. Although, he had tried his best.
Abidal stated this in a farewell letter released following his resignation on Tuesday (18/8). Abidal rejoined the Catalonia team in 2018 to replace Robert Fernandez as technical director.
However, his tenure with Barcelona has been heavily criticized for his transfer policy. Meanwhile Abidal also had a dispute with Barca star Lionel Messi in early 2020 after publicly criticizing the team’s performance following Ernesto Valverde’s dismissal.
Valverde’s replacement, Quique Setien, was only able to stay at Barca for less than eight months when he was sacked after a humiliating 2-8 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League last Saturday.
Although he was guaranteed that Abidal would remain in his position, he followed Setien and resigned on Wednesday (19/8), almost 24 hours later. Abidal’s former assistant, Ramon Planes, is currently filling the position of interim technical director.
Abidal finally opened his voice for the first time on Friday (21/8), since leaving Barcelona. The former France national team defender said that his departure from the club was his own decision.
“Over the past two years, I have tried to make changes that I think are very important for the first team,” Abidal said through his Instagram account as quoted by Goal, Friday (21/8).
“However, despite my faith and persistence, I failed. This second farewell ended two years in which I tried to work to make Barcelona better,” he added.
Currently Abidal has arrived to separate himself from the club. Currently, he continued, the club’s situation is complicated.
“But do not hesitate, I hope with all my heart that the club will recover and success will return soon like this big club,” he concluded.
