DBasia.news – Ben Chilwell’s hope of defending England in the 2022 World Cup has vanished. The 25-year-old player is confirmed to be absent due to an injury.
Chilwell suffered an injury when Chelsea faced Dinamo Zagreb in the last match of Group E of the 2022/23 Champions League. He appeared to be in pain before the match was over.
The match ended in a victory for Chelsea with a score of 2-1. Raheem Sterling and Denis Zakaria scored 2 winning goals for the Blues
“Following the injury sustained in our last game against Dinamo Zagreb, Ben has undergone a scan of his hamstring,” Chelsea said in a statement on their website.
“Results show that Ben has suffered a significant injury and unfortunately our defender is expected to miss the World Cup.”
Chilwell is currently undergoing a rehabilitation program with Chelsea’s medical department. It is still unknown how long the former Leicester City man will recover from his injury.
The injury suffered was a heavy blow for Chilwell. Previously, he had to be sidelined for a while due to an ACL injury in the 2020/21 season.
Chilwell’s absence at the 2022 World Cup, makes England coach Gareth Southgate have to think hard. Considering that previously Kalvin Phillips, Kyle Walker, Reece James, and Bukayo Saka had entered the treatment room.
“After my ACL injury, I worked really hard to make sure I was ready for the World Cup. It has always been my dream,” Chilwell wrote on his Twitter account.
“Unfortunately, this will not be possible after my scan results. I will do everything I can to get back to playing for Chelsea as soon as possible. Thank you for the message of support.”
