DBasia.news – Christian Pulisic has not been able to answer the high expectations that accompanied his arrival to Chelsea. The presence of Thomas Tuchel in the manager’s chair further complicates the situation.
Pulisic was brought in by Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of around £58 million in January 2019. However, he only officially moved at the start of the 2019-2020 season.
Pulisic’s tag is in the spotlight because of his background from the United States. Not a few who think Chelsea paid too much.
Pulisic performed well in the inaugural season. He was able to collect eleven goals and ten assists from 34 matches in all competitions.
But after that, its performance slowly declined. A series of injuries and the change of manager from Frank Lampard to Thomas Tuchel made the situation even more difficult.
Pulisic’s problems grew in the summer of last year. Tuchel tried to find the right position for him.
Pulisic had tasted many positions in the front line such as center forward, right wing, right midfielder, and attacking midfielder. He even had time to play as a wing-back in the pre-season.
That actually made Pulisic even more difficult. He did not have time to show his quality because he played in many positions.
“It’s difficult because I don’t always play in the positions I want to be in. But I think it’s a way to be a versatile player and be able to play in all kinds of positions to have different strengths on the pitch,” Pulisic said in an interview with NBC Sports.
“The difficulty is obviously a big burden for me and mentally sometimes I struggle too.”
Pulisic admitted that life at Chelsea was carried away when he defended the United States national team. He seems to be carrying an additional burden for being the most highlighted player.
“Mentally it has affected me at times. But I’ve always been very excited to be in the national team and enjoy playing with these guys and enjoying football in general.”
