DBasia.news – Liverpool’s decision to bring Darwin Nunez last summer continues to be a polemic. The Reds paid too much for a Nunez.
Liverpool are looking for a new center forward ahead of the 2022-2023 season. The Reds manager, Jurgen Klopp considers this sector to be the weak point of his team.
Nunez’s name then emerged as the main target, however, Liverpool faced fierce resistance from Manchester United, who were also interested in the 23-year-old player.
This condition is actually used by Benfica as the owner of Nunez to obatin large profits. The Portuguese giants realized they could not prevent his departure.
Liverpool finally won the hunt for Nunez. Merseyside Red agreed to redeem it at a price of 75 million euros plus a bonus of 35 million euros.
Benfica president, Rui Costa admitted that it was impossible to refuse the tempting offer from Liverpool. He realized that an opportunity like this didn’t come twice.
“We are talking about one of the highest transfers in the market. We are still out of the pandemic situation, which is holding the football market down and making a sale of 75 million euros plus a bonus of 25 million euros is not open to discussion,” Rui Costa told BTV.
“Darwin’s sale is more than justified, there’s not even a reason to keep it. It was absolutely impossible for the values that went into the club and what Darwin got.”
This transfer is indeed beneficial for all parties concerned. Benfica received fresh funds to strengthen the team, Nunez leveled up to the Premier League, and Liverpool obtained a new striker as planned.
But so far, it seems that only Benfica have really benefited from that. As Aguias wiped out all the matches for the 2022-2023 season with a win to be able to sit at the top of the Portuguese League standings and Group H of the Champions League.
While Nunez is still trying to adapt and find his best performance at Liverpool. His team did start the season less convincingly.
