Four Serie A coaches sent off by referee

DBasia.news – A unique phenomenon filled the course of the ninth week of Serie A 2021-2022. Four top coaches was sent off by the referee.

Gian Piero Gasperini became the coach who started this phenomenon. The Atalanta tactician received a red card when he hosted Udinese at Gewiss Stadium, Sunday (24/10).

Gasperini received a red card in injury time. At that time Atalanta was winning 1-0.

Interestingly, Gasperini did not know the exact reason the referee sent him off the bench.

Unfortunately, Udinese was able to equalize shortly after he was sent off so the match ended 1-1.

“I’m not angry with anyone. I have absolutely no idea why I got the card,” Gasperini told Sky Sports.

“He (the referee) came to give a yellow card, I didn’t say anything, and then there was a red card. It’s a big problem for the referee, because no one on the touchline is complaining about anything.”

A few hours later, Jose Mourinho and Luciano Spalletti followed in Gasperini’s footsteps. Both were sent off when AS Roma and Napoli met at the Stadio Olimpico.

Mourinho was first sent off in the 81st minute. The Portuguese coach received a second yellow card after the first in the 19th minute.

Just like Gasperini, Mourinho did not know for sure the reason the referee sent him out. He felt that he had done nothing wrong.

“I’m not happy with the referee’s decision, but I didn’t say a word,” Mourinho told DAZN.

More misfortune befell Spalletti. He received a red card after the game ended while talking to the referee in charge, Davide Massa.

Just like Mourinho, Spalletti did not feel insulted by the referee. Instead, he praised the referee’s performance.

“I went to him to say ‘That’s great’. He put it all together and showed me a red card,” Spalletti said.

Simone Inzaghi’s Stubbornness

Simone Inzaghi followed this trend when Inter Milan hosted Juventus at the Giuseppe Meazza.

However, unlike the three previous coaches, the 45-year-old coach did indeed protest excessively.

Inzaghi was seen screaming and throwing a vest after the referee awarded a penalty to Juventus. The decision was quite controversial even though VAR has been used.

Inzaghi’s attitude has made Maurizio Mariani not hesitate to issue a direct red card. The match between the two teams ended in a 1-1 draw. This phenomenon certainly sets a bad precedent for Italy. Serie A operators must take action to prevent this from happening in the future.
