Frank Lampard is reluctant to mention Edouard Mendy as the cause of Chelsea’s defeat

DBasia.news – Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard is reluctant to blame Edouard Mendy for his team’s defeat against Everton. In that match, Mendy was the one who caused the hosts to receive a penalty.

Everton took a 1-0 lead when hosting Chelsea in the 2020-2021 Premier League match, at Goodison Park, Sunday (13/12) am. The Toffees’ only goal was scored by Gylfi Sigurosson in the 22nd minute from the spot.

The referee pointed to the spot after Edouard Mendy fouled Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Meanwhile, 10 of Chelsea’s chances did not produce goals.

Not surprisingly, Edouard Mendy’s appearance was in the spotlight after the match. The Senegalese goalkeeper was considered to be the culprit for Chelsea’s defeat.

However, Lampard did not agree with this matter. According to him, the penalty did not happen only because of Mendy’s mistake.

“Mendy has been outstanding since he was here. I think it’s not just his fault. The mentality of the team to face the rebound at the start of the game was not that good,” Lampard said as reported by Chelsea’s official website.

“They are a team that has a good game organization. They wanted to stop the way we play. When conceding early, it will be difficult.”

According to Lampard, Chelsea really was unable to do much. However, he felt that the Blues did not deserve to lose.

“We are developing and games like this is possible. I don’t like their style of play, but that’s the challenge. We have to get back up and come back strong. Let’s see on Tuesday,” stated Lampard.

Chelsea signed Edouard Mendy from Stade Rennais at the start of this season for a fee of 24 million euros. Mendy was projected as a substitute for Kepa Arrizabalaga who appeared disappointing. So far, Mendy has kept nine clean sheets in 13 matches in the Premier League and Champions League.
