DBasia.news – Tottenham Hotspurs defender, Jan Vertonghen will hold the status of a free transfer at the end of June. But he still feels confident that he is able to obtain a new club in the midst of the corona virus pandemic.
On the contrary, Vertonghen actually felt benefited from his status. The Belgian defender admitted that at this time he has been offered by many clubs.
The corona virus pandemic puts European clubs at risk of substantial losses. They also do not have the funds to purchase new players, so they search for free transfers.
“Many clubs don’t have the funds to make transfers. Free transfer players like me are even more desirable in the corona virus crisis,” Vertonghen said as quoted by the BBC.
Vertonghen has not made any choices regarding his new club. He also opened the chance to stay at Tottenham if the London club offered a contract extension.
“Since January, a number of clubs have submitted serious proposals. I want to be signed by the right club and that could be Spurs or other clubs,” he added.
Vertonghen is a graduate of the Ajax Amsterdam academy. He has been strengthening Tottenham since 2012.
Although now 33 years old, Vertonghen still wants a career in Europe. He opened the opportunity to feel the experience of performing in other top European leagues.
“I want to continue at the top level in a few more years. The Spanish and Italian leagues are definitely (an option) but I will continue to keep other options open,” he added.
FIFA actually has made special rules related to special player contracts during this pandemic. Any player whose contract expires at the end of June can be extended by the club until the 2019-2020 season competition is over.
