DBasia.news – England coach, Gareth Southgate, has announced 27 names in the squad during the Nations League semifinals. A number of players in the squad will still fight in the final of the European club tournament.
The England national team will fight the Netherlands at Estadio D. Afonso Henriques (7/6) 1:45 a.m. WIB. The match took place after the Champions League final between Liverpool against Tottenham Hotspur at Wanda Metropolitano (2/6) WIB.
In addition to the Champions League final, Chelsea and Arsenal, two other English teams will also meet in the Europa League final (30/5) in Baku, Azerbaijan. However, the national team players who play at the club will only join on Monday, June 3, 2019 local time.
Southgate hopes England can win the Nations League after the Three Lions’ good performances at the 2018 World Cup. The Nations League title will be a reward for England’s hard work over the past 12 months.
“We are looking forward to the opportunity to end the summer, when everything is over. This (Nations League) is a good opportunity to build on the results of the last 12 months,” said Southgate at the press conference session, quoted from the official FA website.
“I know players will especially feel passion for this opportunity and just play two games to win the trophy, fight the top teams throughout the competition. This will be a significant improvement for us.”
One name that Southgate continued to call after last defending England in March 2017, against Germany, was Nathan Redmond.
“He (Redmond) finished the season very well with Southampton. I think since the manager’s change and their style of play, this is the same as what we asked with the team’s attackers,” Southgate added.
“He was very fast and able to put pressure on him. He also started to score a lot of regular goals in the difficult season last season. This is a good opportunity for Nathan.”
