DBasia.news – Former Manchester United captain, Garry Neville, insists that the Red Devils needed a good center-back more than Borussia Dortmund winger, Jadon Sancho.
Most recently, Man United were beaten by Crystal Palace 3-1 in the first match of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad in the English Premier League 2020/21 season [entering the second week] at Old Trafford, Saturday (19/9).
Palace goals were scored by Andros Townsend (7 ‘) and Wilfred Zaha (74’ [penalty], 85 ‘). Meanwhile United’s reply was scored by new midfielder, Donny van de beek (80 ‘).
Man United have been linked with Sancho since the end of last season. However, Neville stressed that the urgency of Solskjaer is actually to obtain a new center-back.
“You can talk whatever you like about Jadon Sancho, but until they [Man United] gets a center-back who can run and defend one-on-one, you will never win the league,” said Neville, who is now a regular commentator on Sky Sports.
“They are not going to win the league with that center-back pair. They have to get a highly mobile, fast and dominant center-back alongside Lindelof or Maguire,” he added.
Neville said United looked exhausted, reacted slowly and were way below Palace in terms of fitness.
Indeed, Man United has returned to the first match in the domestic league just five weeks after being defeated by Sevilla in the 2019/20 Europa League semi-finals.
Lindelof, a Swedish defender who is in his fourth season with Man United, was appointed by Neville as the culprit for the two goals scored by Zaha.
“Lindelof was not strong enough there. That’s a 50:50 chance. He’s weak, “concluded Neville.
Last season, Man United finished third after being unbeaten in the last 14 games. Of course, the pressure was again on Solskjaer after this unfortunate start.
United will visit the headquarters of the Championship Division club, Luton Town, in the third round of the Premier League Cup, Wednesday (23/9) am, WIB.
