DBasia.news – Bayern Munich’s top position in the standings is in danger of sagging after swallowing a narrow 2–3 defeat of hosts Borussia Monchengladbach in the opening match of Week 15 of the German Bundesliga.
In a match that took place at Borussia-Park on Saturday (9/1), Munich were beaten by a thin score of 2-3. Even though Hansi Flick’s team was two goals ahead.
Robert Lewandowski broke the deadlock through the penalty spot when the game entered the 20th minute. The prize was given by the referee after Florian Neuhaus was deemed to have done handball after checking VAR.
Six minutes later, Munich successfully doubled the lead through Leon Goretzka’s hard kick from outside the penalty box. The visitors also had the upper hand.
But that advantage just disappeared. Monchengladbach were able to equalize before half-time with a pair of goals from Jonas Hofmann.
Four minutes after the second half started, Monchengladbach successfully reversed the position. Florian Neuhaus made amends in the first half with a spectacular goal from the penalty area.
Monchengladbach was able to maintain their lead until the end of the match. Munich also had to be willing to swallow their second defeat in the Bundesliga this season.
Monchengladbach also became the first team after Cologne in February 2011 to make a comeback against Munich. Both teams did so after trailing two goals earlier.
On the other hand, this defeat threatened Munich to lose its top position. This will happen if RB Leipzig can beat Borussia Dortmund on Sunday (10/1).
In addition, the defeat against Monchengladbach also revealed facts related to the fragility of the Munich defense. Manuel Neuer and his friends have failed to keep a clean sheet in the last ten matches.
This matter must be addressed by Flick immediately. If not, don’t expect them to repeat last season’s score by buying up all the available titles.
