DBasia.news – Former Real Madrid goalkeeper, Iker Casillas, decided to run for the number one seat of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Casillas’ decision was taken as he wanted to advance the Matador Team’s football.
“Yes, I will run as President of the RFEF when the election is held. Together, we will place the federation in the highest position in the world of football, “Casillas said on Twitter.
“I have already told my club president, FC Porto, about this decision and I can only express my deepest gratitude to them,” he stated.
Iker Casillas is actually not retired. He has never announced his retirement as a football player. However, the FC Porto goalkeeper has not played since April 2019 after suffering a heart attack.
During the recovery period, Iker Casillas assumed the role of being part of Porto’s coaching staff. Nevertheless, he is still registered in the Porto 2019-20 squad.
Now, the former Real Madrid goalkeeper is running for RFEF President. Casillas will fight Luis Rubiales, who is back in the upcoming elections this year.
“We work respectfully and more than 23 thousand voters are waiting for us in fair and transparent elections. Thank you for all the love. It all strengthened me, “he stated.
If elected with a four-year term until 2024, Iker Casillas will end his career as a player for 20 years.
