DBasia.news – Italy’s victory over Spain in the Euro 2020 semifinal match, Wednesday (7/7/2021) yesterday morning was greeted with great fanfare by many people. Unfortunately, that success left a little bitter taste in Jose Mourinho’s heart.
Italy was made to suffer by Spain in that match. The possession of the ball was completely dominated by La Furia Roja, leaving Gli Azzurri struggling to create scoring chances.
Italy, in the previous matches, always dominated the game. They actually lost the match but were able to steal the first goal through Federico Chiesa.
Alvaro Morata’s reply made the score 1-1. The position lasted until the end of the extra team and in the penalty round, Italy was only able to pocket the victory with a score of 4-2.
Jose Mourinho, who was appointed as the new coach of AS Roma a few months ago, filled his spare time by becoming a special pundit on talkSPORT at Euro 2020. As an opening, he praised italy.
“It’s always a shame a team loses on penalties, but that’s the reality of football. They [Italy] can withstand the pressure in a better way, a team that deserved to win,” he said.
However, the former Tottenham captain was disappointed because the Italy he knows now, which he watched throughout the Euro 2020 show, was much better in the previous matches.
“I feel Italy is performing like it used to be many years ago, solid, patient, defensive and always compact. But today’s Italy is not like that, they are better than that,” continued Mourinho.
The midfield trio fronted by Marco Verratti, Jorginho and Nicolo Barella appeared fantastic, making Italy one of the best teams at Euro 2020. However, Mourinho did not see that again in yesterday’s match.
“Until yesterday [before the match against Spain], Italy was the best team at the Euros, one of the best,” added Mourinho.
“Playing well with creations in midfield, the triangle between Verratti, Jorginho and Barella was fantastic. They played well until yesterday,” he concluded.
Regardless, a win is still a win. Italy has the right to advance to the final round and will face England at Wembley Stadium on Monday (12/7/2021).
