DBasia.news – Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has indicated James Milner will remain part of his team next season. Currently, Liverpool are negotiating to extend the contract of the versatile player.
James Milner is one of the oldest players in the Liverpool squad. The English midfielder is already 36 years old. Milner’s contract will expire at the end of this season.
However, Liverpool still need Milner’s services. Leadership, experience and ability has made Klopp want Milner to stay.
“There were discussions with Milner. However, usually we don’t comment on that,” Klopp said as quoted by the Mirror.
“There is no reason for that. However, I am in the process of discussion. The club is also in communication with Milner. So, we will see,” added the coach.
Milner started his professional career in his hometown of Leeds. He made his debut in the Premier League at the age of 16.
Then, Milner’s journey continued to Newcastle United and Aston Villa before landing at Manchester City for a fee of €26 million in 2010.
After that, Milner joined Liverpool in 2015 after his contract expired with The Citizens.
Klopp believes Milner still had a strong desire to appear. The player is supported by an excellent physical condition.
“There is no possibility for Milner to retire next season. He still really wants to play.”
“I understand that. Because life after a career when you are lucky enough to stay healthy will feel much longer than when you were still playing,” explained Klopp.
“So if you can extend your career playing football for as long as you can, that’s much better than anything else. Milner loves what he’s doing and will definitely keep playing next year.”
