DBasia.news –  Gremio’s squad entered the field wearing masks before the match against Sao Luiz as the Brazilian League protests continued amid fears of a global pandemic Covid-19.

White masks were worn by Gremio players and their coach, Portaluppi, when entering the stadium Arena, Gremio Stadium, Brazil, Sunday, local time, before the match against Sao Luiz in Campeonato Gaucho.

“This action is our implicit statement that the championship should be stopped first. Life must be a top priority,” Gremio Football Director, Paulo Luz, said as quoted by the official UOL website.

Gremio defeated Sao Luiz 3-2 in a match that was held without the presence of spectators

The protest was a continuation of the concerns voiced by footballers in South America over the decision of local authorities to continue the match to be played in a stadium without spectators.

Earlier, Flamengo coach, Jorge Jesus, has asked for a suspension of the competition, stating players needed to be protected as they were not “super humans”.

In Argentina, River Plate not only refused to play the Superliga Cup match against Atletico Tucuman on Saturday (14/3) but also closed their stadium, leaving match officials and their opposing squad stranded outside the stadium.
