DBasia.news – Sad news from England. Liverpool and England legend Roger Hunt died at the age of 83 on Tuesday (28/9).
Roger Hunt is a member of the England national team that won the 1966 World Cup. Until now, Hunt is Liverpool’s top scorer in the English league with 244 goals.
With the England national team, Hunt contributed 18 goals from 34 appearances since his debut in 1962. At that time Liverpool were still in the second tier of English football.
When England won the 1966 World Cup, Hunt contributed three goals.
“We are saddened by the passing of legendary former player Roger Hunt,” Liverpool said in a statement.
“Everyone at Liverpool FC is with Roger’s family and friends at this sad and difficult time.”
Over the past few days, English football has been feeling sad. Hunt died just days after another England legend Jimmy Greaves died at the age of 81.
At club level, Hunt helped legendary coach Bill Shankly’s Liverpool win two league trophies and the first FA Cup in 1964-65.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also expressed his deep condolences. “Roger Hunt is second to none in his importance in the history of Liverpool FC, that’s clear,” said Klopp.
“To be the goalscoring catalyst for Shankly’s team to actually achieve promotion and then win the league title and FA Cup has put him in the ranks of Liverpool legends, who made us the club we are today.”
