Liverpool discouraged to Utilize Government Assistance

DBasia.news –  Liverpool finally had to cancel their intention to take advantage of government assistance to pay part of the salaries of its employees. It happened due to the criticism directed at the Reds.

Initially Liverpool wanted to take advantage of The Coronavirus Job Retention policy issued by the British government to protect workers’ rights. This policy has made the government obliged to pay 80 percent of workers’ salaries who are laid off during the pandemic.

The Reds have taken advantage of this policy by laying off employees so they only need to pay 20 percent of their salary. Similar steps were also taken by Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Norwich City.

This decision could make Liverpool skimp significantly. But the move is considered by many parties, including its legends, to have damaged the image of the club.

“We came to the wrong conclusion last week by announcing to implement the corona virus retention scheme and laying off staff due to the delay in the Premier League football calendar, and really apologize for that,” Liverpool CEO, Peter Moore, said on the club’s official website.

“This is the result of lengthy consultations and our own internal considerations at various levels of the club that we have chosen to find alternative ways, although we could have used a government assistance scheme in the midst of the corona virus pandemic.”

As a big club, Liverpool’s move to use government assistance to pay its employees is indeed not commendable. Moreover, city rivals, Everton, were not experiencing financial problems.

For example, Manchester United and Manchester City have confirmed that they will pay their employees in full. The two clubs also donated money to help medical staff deal with the corona virus.
