DBasia.news – Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp stressed how crucial it would be to qualify for the Champions League next season for the club. Klopp mentioned two impacts on the Reds if they don’t play in the Champions League.
Currently Liverpool, who have the status of defending Premier League champions, are in sixth place in the standings with 43 points from 26 matches. Two points adrift of West Ham United who are fourth.
Two things that worry Klopp if Liverpool does not qualify for the Champions League are the financial impact and attractiveness. European clubs financially have been affected by the corona virus pandemic.
It is no doubt that if Liverpool does not play in the Champions League, their financial condition will be even more affected. Then the appeal of recruiting top European names will also decrease if they don’t play in the tournament.
“The main reason for qualifying for the Champions League is always financial. This is a great competition to play, but for this club it’s about (finances),” said Jurgen Klopp as quoted by Goal.
“Of course you want to excite some of the players. At first we sat with some of the players who got offers from clubs that were playing in the Champions League and it was like ‘OK, sorry, we can only offer you nothing or the Europa League!’
“But apart from that, it’s always about finances. This year there is no difference, in my opinion. I hope people still see us doing our best and trying everything to make it happen, but we will see how it will end,” added Klopp.
Liverpool’s Moneyball
Liverpool’s recruitment system adopts moneyball that has been used in the United States in baseball. The system is to sign players at low prices, it is not very well known, but with the qualities the team needs.
Liverpool had time to spend on players because of the need to recruit Virgil van Dijk and Alisson. However, in the summer of 2020 Liverpool did not transfer many players, only recruiting Adrian, Kostas Tsimikas and Thiago Alcantara.
Even in January, if Liverpool were not hit by the hurricane of injuries at the back, the club would not have signed Ben Davies (Preston North End) and Ozan Kabak (Schalke).
