Liverpool Stadium Expansion Delayed Due To Coronavirus Pandemic

DBasia.news – Anfield Road expansion was delayed by one year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the earliest completion target is 2023.

Liverpool has opened its Main Stand which was rebuilt in 2016 to increase the seating capacity to more than 54,000. The club began renovating the Anfield Road stands in December.

But the project was suspended because of delays due to lockdown in the UK. Initially this rehabilitation was set to be completed in the summer of 2022 and the stadium’s capacity was increased to more than 61,000.

“The Anfield Road complex development program is an 18-month process and requires two summer windows to be successful,” Liverpool Chief Operating Office Andy Hughes said.

“This is why we paused the project for at least 12 months so that we will finish the program early in the summer of 2023 instead of the summer of 2022 as originally planned.”

After this expansion Anfield will become the third largest Premier League stadium under Manchester United’s Old Trafford and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Professional football in England has been suspended indefinitely since mid-March. The UK government lockdown has been implemented until May 7.
