Make Big Changes in the Defense Line, Chelsea Bring Three Defenders

By db-admin

DBasia.news – Chelsea has been very active in the transfer market this summer. Frank Lampard’s squad has recruited five players, Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr, and most recently Thiago Silva.

The last three names play as defenders. This clearly shows Lampard’s desire to fix the Chelsea defense, which conceded 54 goals in the Premier League last season. That number exceeds other teams at the top of the standings.

Chilwell was brought off from Leicester City for 50 million pounds and contracted for five years. Meanwhile, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr were recruited for free because their contracts ended with PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) and Nice.

Silva and Sarr center back and Chilwell left back. Their arrival has the potential to indicate the departure of two other left-backs, Marcos Alonso or Emerson Palmieri, or one of the center-backs from Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen, Fikayo Tomori and Antonio Rudiger.

Now Chelsea are just waiting for Kai Havertz, who, according to Italian football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, will need a medical and be introduced as the club’s new player. Chelsea have agreed on the price of Havertz and Bayer Leverkusen.

Apart from transfers that cost Chelsea a fee, Chelsea’s decision to recruit Silva and Sarr was right considering they were recruited for free. Moreover, Silva and Sarr are not just ordinary center-backs.

Silva (35 years) is very experienced after previously playing with AC Milan (2009-2012) and PSG (2012-2020). The quality is never in doubt, either from the quality of his technique or his leadership spirit.

“Silva showed he can still show (the game) at the highest level in Sunday’s Champions League final (against Bayern Munich).”

“The result was ultimately disappointing for him and for PSG, but Silva was instrumental in warding off Robert Lewandowski for a long time and also overcoming Bayern’s fast winger well.”

“That defensive quality, coupled with the ability to play the ball, makes him a good fit for Frank Lampard’s team but what should be more useful is his experience – especially at a Chelsea back which doesn’t have that,” said Sky Sports writer Nick Wright.

Sky Sports statistics show that last season in Ligue 1 2019-2020 Silva had a passing accuracy of 95.45 percent per 90 minutes (top order), passes hit on target in the opponent’s defense 14.08 percent per 90 minutes (second best), blocked the ball 0 , 86 percent.

Meanwhile Sarr is only 21 years old and prepared by Chelsea for a long term investment. Then there is Chilwell who is an ‘upgraded’ version of Alonso and Emerson from the defensive side, but also strong when going up to help attack.

Chilwell last season was involved in Leicester’s six Premier League goals (three goals and three assists). That number equals Alonso (four goals and two assists) with nine games less.
