Man United Made a Fatal Mistake Not Signing Antonio Conte

DBasia.news – Former Liverpool player Stewart Downing has questioned Manchester United’s decision to miss the chance to sign Antonio Conte. Downing said Manchester United had made a fatal mistake by not bringing in the coach.

In November last year, Manchester United decided to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from his position as team manager. The decision was taken after the Red Devils showed a very poor performance at the start of the season.

Man United had been linked with Antonio Conte to become their manager. The Italian coach happened to be in an unemployed position after resigning from Inter Milan at the end of last season. Conte is considered worthy of coaching Manchester United because he has won the Premier League with Chelsea and Serie A with Juventus and Inter.

But oddly enough, Manchester United instead chose to appoint Ralf Rangnick as interim manager who served until the end of the season. While Conte chose to move closer to Tottenham Hotspur.

MU’s decision did not bear fruit. Under the direction of Rangnick they still appear inconsistent. In fact they have certainly not won a single trophy this season.

Responding to this, Stewart Downing assessed that Man United had made the wrong decision by not signing Conte.

“The signings were very important for United this summer but I don’t think the manager’s situation will help,” Downing said as quoted by Caughtoffside.

“I know a lot of people say he is the only player available but this is Manchester United we are talking about. Antonio Conte is available and why didn’t they sign him?”

On the same occasion, Downing also commented on the news about Mauricio Pochettino entering the Man United coaching market. Downing admits he doesn’t believe Pochettino will be able to make a difference at Old Trafford.

“What about Mauricio Pochettino?” he continued.

“They are Man United. go and get the best coach, he is not the only coach. The situation has not been handled well, I don’t think he will be able to,” he concluded.
