DBasia.news – It has been five years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired to coach Manchester United. In that period, The Red Devils faced difficulties to get the right balance just like in the Ferguson era.
Not only competing to get the Premier League title, Man United struggled very hard to finish in the big four of Champions League. Moreover, until now Man United has changed the manager three times.
David Moyes, Ryan Giggs (caretaker), Louis van Gaal, and Jose Mourinho. Those are four managers who were and now coach Man United after Ferguson. Seems like Man United feel hard to forget Ferguson.
No wonder, Ferguson has been coaching Man United for 26 years and successfully achieved the prestigious trophies. The best manager status of Great Britain also entitled to the Scottish coach. He was the one who built Man United foundation for years.
Hence, for some supporters of Man United, they feel sad seeing the dedication of their beloved team in this modern football era. Moreover, their rival, Manchester City, now become much better under Pep Guardiola.
Ryan Giggs
Rene Meulensteen, former Ferguson’s assistant in United, has the unique theory about the regression of Man United. He believed the situation won’t happen if the club appointed Giggs since the time Ferguson retired.
In Meulensteen view, Giggs is the right person to coach United because he understands the internal situation of the club that he supported from 1990 until 2014. The caretaker or temporary manager status shouldn’t be the parameter to measure his quality.
“At United, there was stability and continuity. Ferguson, David Gill, the Glazers. It was working like clockwork. So there was another way of doing it, which was basically bringing somebody from within. Then Ferguson could’ve managed his departure in a different way,” Meulensteen told Standard Sport.
“He could’ve faded into the background over time and helped with this important transition, obtaining a consultancy role. Knowing that Ryan Giggs was keen on stepping into coaching – he was doing his licenses – he knew United inside out. The culture, the identity – he knows everything.”
“Plus with us (Ferguson’s existing backroom staff) being around there, plus Ferguson still being there, that could’ve been an ideal scenario. That is just a different way, a different strategy, which I think could’ve worked,” Meulensteen added.
Everything could happen in the future. But, no one can ensure that Giggs will coach United because he is now coaching his team, Wales. The experience in Wales is expected to add Giggs’ experience as a manager and coach United in the future.
