Manchester United got off to a bad start in the Champions League

DBasia.news – Fan enthusiasm for Manchester United after Cristiano Ronaldo returned to defend the club instantly disappeared in the Champions League. Man United started the Champions League group phase this season badly.

Playing at the Stade de Suisse, the headquarters of Young Boys in the Champions League group F match, Tuesday (14/09) WIB, Harry Maguire and his team mates suffered a 1-2 defeat after winning 1-0 from Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal (13′).

The momentum for Young Boys occurred after Aaron Wan-Bissaka received a red card in the 35th minute. Wan-Bissaka committed a hard foul when he stepped on Christopher Martins’ ankle and received a straight red card.

After that Young Boys played offensively and the result turned out to be a 2-1 win from goals scored by Moumi Ngamaleu (66′) and Theoson Siebatcheu (90+5′). Siebatcheu’s goal was scored by Jesse Lingard’s sloppy back-pass.

“It appeared like a well-earned point and a good point in a tough game. When you get the first goal you think you have a big chance, it was enough to win the game, but unfortunately a red card will always have an impact.

“We need 12 points to qualify. You have to win your home game, win one away game and qualify.”

“A lost chance tonight, of course, but again last year we won our first two games against PSG and Red Bull (Leipzig) and everyone thought we were through. So we have five games to get 10 or 12 points.”

Solskjaer’s ‘contribution’

Ironically, since coaching United in December 2018 until now, Solskjaer, who is actually a club legend, has played a major role in a number of team defeats in the Champions League.

According to data from Opta, Man United have lost their seventh of 11 Champions League games under Solskjaer. As much as 13% of their total5 losses in the competition have come to Solskjaer, although Solskjaer has only led as much as 4.8 of United’s games (11 of 231 games).

Not a good statistical record, especially if you remember United’s journey last season in the Champions League when the team failed to qualify from the group phase (losing to PSG and RB Leipzig) and ended up playing in the Europa League.

Another minus note is that United only recorded two shots on target against Young Boys. That’s the lowest record of 138 Champions League games for Man United since 2003-2004, even worse, the two kicks only came from Ronaldo.

Man United will only play again in the second match of the Champions League group F at Old Trafford, against the team they faced in last season’s Europa League final, Villarreal on September 30, 2021.
