The new defender, who was bought from Ajax in the transfer window this summer, started his career with the Red Devils heavily, struggling with successive defeats to Brighton and Brentford, but has now come back impressively.
The Argentina national team star has performed well in recent victories, including against Liverpool and Arsenal, and kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 defeat of Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday (15/9).
As they beat the Moldovan giants, there were chants from the Man United fans cheering their new centre-back, and Martinez was proud to hear that.
“I was a bit shocked, but at the same time very proud,” the 24-year-old star told MUTV post-match.
“To come here, to the best club in the world, and the fans to sing ‘Argentina, Argentina!’ it was incredible.”
The win at the Sheriff was the fifth time Martinez has teamed up with Raphael Varane to be the gatekeeper of United’s defense since the first minute, as well as their third clean sheet, conceding only two goals in five games.
Erik ten Hag gave Varane high praise afterwards, saying: “With Rapha Varane there at the helm, he puts everyone in the right position.”
