DBasia.news – Former Manchester United player Paul McGrath believes the Red Devils should have bought Kalidou Koulibaly, not Harry Maguire.
Maguire has left Leicester City and moved to Manchester United at 80 million pounds.
With that price, Maguire now holds the title of the most expensive defender in the world, beating Virgil van Dijk’s record.
“So Maguire is now a better player than Van Dijk? I hope he proves that but it only shows you the money Manchester United have to spend to land an old target that two years ago they didn’t want to buy for 14 million pounds,” McGrath said.
“They bought Maguire for three reasons. First, at the age of 26, Maguire can offer the best seven or eight years of his career. Second, he’s English, always a problem with UEFA’s eligibility rules. But third, and most important, Manchester United must get a leader behind, a man who will make a decision.”
“I’d rather United buy Koulibaly. But I understand why the club chose Maguire. He is two years younger and Koulibaly is a Senegalese, who will force United to buy English players in other positions where they might want to import players,” McGrath added.
