Petr Cech’s Intervention Behind Edouard Mendy’s Arrival to Chelsea

DBasia.news – Chelsea’s decision to bring in Edouard Mendy in the summer transfer market has paid off. But the transfer would not have happened without the intervention of Petr Cech.

Mendy didn’t need long to show his quality. He immediately won the status of Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper by eliminating Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Mendy also answered that belief brilliantly. Chelsea goalkeeper has never conceded in three Premier League matches that have been undertaken.

In total, Mendy has recorded five clean sheets from six matches with Chelsea. The goal was only broken once in normal time when Chelsea met Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup.

Even though Mendy doesn’t seem to be Chelsea’s main target in the goalkeeping position. The Blues were previously linked with Jan Oblak and Dean Henderson.

However, Cech denied this. The man who had served as a technical advisor admitted that he recommended Mendy as the first option in the position of goalkeeper to purchase.

“When it was clear last summer that a new goalkeeper was needed to compete with Kepa and Willy Caballero. I internally suggested several names, including Edouard,” said Cech to L’Equipe.

“I insisted he was best on the list. My advice was followed.”

Interestingly, Cech had been monitoring Mendy’s progress for a while. The background that both had strengthened Rennes has made him curious.

“I have followed him for three and a half years, when he was at Reims. Initially, it was Christophe Lollichon who told me about him, because he was unemployed,” he added.

“Since then, Edouard has continued to improve, season after season.”

This further shows Cech’s important role in Chelsea’s transfer activities. He also played an important role in realizing the arrival of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.

But Cech’s talent in targeting quality players for Chelsea had to stop for a moment. He made the decision to become one of Mendy’s coatings this season.
