“Paris Saint-Germain are finally ready to announce the departure of Mauricio Pochettino and Leonardo. Nasser Al-Khelaifi (PSG President) will be ready to have a final meeting to decide on a new manager,” said Fabrizio Romano, a European football transfer expert.
Pochettino (50 years old) has only coached PSG since January 2021. Despite winning the Ligue 1 title, French Cup and French Super Cup, Pochettino will still be fired for failing to bring PSG success in the Champions League.
Leonardo is also believed to be following the departure of Pochettino. Leonardo’s successor is AS Monaco’s sporting director, Luis Ocampos. PSG are also eyeing Zinedine Zidane but the former Real Madrid coach doesn’t want to coach PSG.
Allegedly the French football legend is waiting for a chance to coach the French national team, replacing Didier Deschamps after the 2022 World Cup. No doubt with the arrival of Ocampos PSG will also appoint a new coach.
As reported by The Telegraph, PSG are considering signing Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese coach has just won the UEFA Conference League with AS Roma and still has two years remaining on his contract there.
Ocampos has a close relationship with Mourinho since at Real Madrid, even Mourinho had recommended Ocampos to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, two clubs that Mourinho had coached.
Mourinho’s record in Europe is a consideration for PSG to sign him. Mourinho is the first coach to win three European trophies in different competitions from the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
That experience is what PSG hopes can help them end their wait for the European title. PSG already has a star-studded squad with Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Sergio Ramos and Lionel Messi.
It is still unknown if Mourinho is interested in the job as he is at home in Rome and wants to make history there. Moreover, the 59-year-old coach has often sparked controversy with the club he coached. That will also be considered by PSG.
