DBasia.news – Manchester City have just been banned from appearing in the European competition for two seasons by UEFA. Pep Guardiola’s team also was unable to participate in the Champions League.
The announcement of sanctions was just issued by the highest authority of European football, Friday (14/2) local time. Sheikh Mansour’s club is already planning to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
But until CAS decides otherwise, City, who is now ranked second in the Premier League, are unable to compete in the Champions League next season.
If City aren’t able to appear in the Champions League, who will take their allotment?
City is likely to end the 2019/20 season by remaining in the top four of the standings. In such conditions, the Champions League allotment will be transferred to fifth place in the Premier League final standings.
Currently, Sheffield United, who are in the promotion team status, are sitting in fifth place with 39 points from 26 matches.
But the way for the team nicknamed The Blades to the Champions League has clearly not been easy. Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Everton and Manchester United have been trailing behind them.
The distance of these five teams in the standings is very close. Sheffield is only 2 points ahead of Spurs, 3 points from Wolves and Everton, and 4 points from MU.
With the remaining matches (12-13 matches), Arsenal who are in 10th position of the standings with 31 points can still catch up.
Meanwhile, the Europa League allotment which belonged to the fifth-ranked team will be given to the sixth-ranked final standings team.
