DBasia.news – Riots between supporters had taken place in Honduras. The riots left three dead, 10 injured, and former Celtic player, Emilio Izaguirre, also injured.
The derby took place between two Honduran clubs, Olimpia and Motagua, in Tegucigalpa. However, the match was postponed as riots broke out inside and outside of the stadium before the match began. Izaquirre’s eye was injured by a broken glass from of a bus window that had been shattered by supporters.
The 33-year-old player was one of three injured when a Motagua team bus was stoned outside the stadium. While showing the bandages in his eyes, Izaguirre showed a wound on his face and said there was nothing serious about the wound.
In Izaguirre’s post, he also said the danger had passed and it was painful to imagine people leaving because of the incident. The police dispersed the crowd of fans with tear gas.
“Three people died and seven others were stabbed and shot. One of them was a small child. Three injured adults were in critical condition,” stated Laura Schoenherr, a spokesman for the local hospital, as quoted by BBC Sport.
It was not clear what triggered the riot. But according to the Motagua version, Olimpia hardliners became the ringleader of the riots. “Severe punishment must clearly be given by the authorities,” Motagua said in a statement.
Izaguirre is one player that is well known to the European public. For two periods the Honduran national team player strengthened Celtic (2010-2017 and 2018-19). During that time Izaguirre also won seven Scottish Premier League titles.
