Rivaldo: Barcelona Made A Mistake because They Didn’t Sell Lionel Messi

DBasia.news – The Brazilian legend of Barcelona, Rivaldo, said that his former club made a mistake because he did not sell Lionel Messi last summer. Now they have to lose the Argentine star for free at the end of the season.

Barcelona is reportedly threatened with bankruptcy. Currently, Barca has debts of up to 1.2 billion euros. On the other hand, Barca is reportedly also late in paying player salaries.

According to Rivaldo, this condition could have been avoided if Barcelona allowed Lionel Messi to leave last summer. That way, Barca will get funds from the transfer of La Pulga.

“Barcelona were not in a good financial condition before the pandemic. However, things got worse last year and the departure of Lionel Messi was almost inevitable. The club may need to sell some players to get money,” Rivaldo told Betfair.

Rivaldo said Barcelona should make Real Madrid an example. When the relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo deteriorated, Madrid were not afraid to sell the player to Juventus.

“As I said before, the club board made the mistake of not selling Messi when he had one year left on his contract. That was done by Real Madrid when they sold Cristiano Ronaldo. Madrid received 100 million euros in return.”

“It is sad to see such a talented and important player leave Barcelona for free at a time when the club is experiencing financial problems,” said Rivaldo.

After failing to sell Messi, Barcelona is now asked to release Philippe Coutinho. Moreover, the Brazilian player did not have much impact on the Blaugrana.

“Seeing the potential for a transfer, I think Coutinho will leave soon. He has an interest in England and Barcelona can generate good income. Maybe Barca will keep players like Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann,” said Rivaldo.

“Coutinho has never performed the best in Spain. I’m sure there are clubs who are willing to pay big for Countinho, although not as big as what Barcelona spent for Liverpool.”

Next, Barcelona will host Athletic Bilbao in the 20th week of LaLiga 2020-2021, at Camp Nou, Monday (1/2) in the morning WIB. Currently, Barca is in third place with 10 points difference from Atletico Madrid who are at the top of the standings. The Brazilian legend of Barcelona, Rivaldo, said that his former club made a mistake because he did not sell Lionel Messi last summer.
