Sergio Ramos Admits Handball, but Referee Doesn’t Give Penalty Kick

An additional three points took Madrid to second with 29 points. They leveled on points against Atletico Madrid at the top of the table but Los Blancos lost on goal difference.

However, Madrid’s victory over Eibar was marred by controversy. The reason is, Madrid was not penalized, even though Sergio Ramos looked handball in the 82nd minute when the score was still 2-1 for El Real. Yoshinori Muto’s header appeared to hit the Real Madrid captain’s elbow.

The referee, Jose Luis Munuera Montero, checked the Video Assistant Referee regarding this incident. However, he still did not consider this a violation.

Eibar coach Jose Luis Mendilibar was so disappointed by the referee’s decision. He considered his care team should have received a penalty.

The 59-year-old coach even revealed that Ramos had admitted to handball. Ramos said Eibar deserved a penalty against another player shortly after the incident.

“The ball hit the hand and it looked like a penalty for us. Ramos also thought it was a penalty. He said that to other players. I want you to say what you think about this.” said Mendilibar as quoted from Marca.

“Other times, they looked at all (angles) of the camera for two or three minutes. Today, they made a decision in just 20 seconds and didn’t see the incident.”

“I don’t know what the VAR (referee) said. Was he absolutely sure it wasn’t a penalty from what he saw?”

“This happened with handball. Nobody is sure what a penalty is or not. The referee is not even sure about his decision,” Mendilibar added.
