Signing Sergino Dest, Barcelona’s Tradition of Bringing in Dutch Players Continues

DBasia.news – Barcelona officially brought in Sergino Dest, who became the 21st Dutch player to have played for the Blaugrana.

The former Ajax right-back was born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and an American father. Dest chose to represent the United States national team and arrived in Barcelona after Ronald Koeman told the club he wanted to sign him.

Dest joined the many Dutch players who have worn the Barcelona jersey over the years. He followed players like Johan Cruyff, who joined in the 1970s, played 180 games, scored 60 goals and lifted two trophies.

Another legend is Johan Neeskens. The third Dutch player to join was Koeman, who won 12 trophies, including the Champions League title in 1992, where he scored the winner.

There are still Richard Witschge, Jordi Cruyff, Ruud Hesp, Michael Reiziger, Winston Bogarde, Phillip Cocu, Boudewijn Zenden, Patrick Kluivert, Ronald and Frank De Boer, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Marc Overmars, Mark van Bommel, Ibrahim Afellay, Edgar Davids, Jasper Cillessen, and Frenkie de Jong.

Among the Orange ranks, Cocu stood out as the Dutch player with the most minutes played, 17,426, while Kluivert is the top scorer, with 89. Koeman is the player with the most wins, 112.

Dest has previously expressed his desire to play for Barcelona, whose style of football is similar to the Dutch approach and is followed closely by his former team, Ajax.

What’s interesting is, will Dest be the last Dutch player to join Barcelona in this transfer window. Koeman himself is reportedly still asking the club to propose to Lyon striker, Memphis Depay.
