DBasia.news – Last season’s League Cup semi-finalists Manchester United were eliminated prematurely in the latest edition. Entertaining West Ham United in the third round of the 2021-2022 League Cup at Old Trafford, Thursday (23/09), the Red Devils lost 0-1.
The only goal in the game was born from Manuel Lanzini’s goal in the nine minute. United dominated possession with 61 percent of the ball, having 27 shots and six on target but not scoring against Alphonse Areola’s goal.
West Ham managed to avenge the 1-2 defeat from the previous match in the Premier League which was held at the London Stadium. For David Moyes, the West Ham coach who incidentally was a former United coach, it was the first victory at Old Trafford since 2014.
“Less goals. Another slow start and that needs to be addressed. They scored and after that we played well for a long time, trying to score and the stats mean nothing. When you have 27 shots the players have tried it,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports.
“We built up the pressure, Mason Greenwood came in and gave good stuff but sometimes the pressure doesn’t pay off. He made a positive impact, he was fresh and sharp but too little too late. The last six or seven minutes we did our best and they could have scored some goals.”
“You want to get through it but it’s a long season, we tried it well. I can’t blame them for the attitude and we have big games to come.”
“It’s been a long journey all season, we have a lot of games and keep doing what we’re doing, trying to get a result. We got knocked out in this tournament which isn’t great, but we will focus on Saturday.”
“The first 10 minutes we were slow both on and off the ball and that’s something we have to deal with. I wasn’t happy with the start, no, but we can not find ourselves in this situation and hope to get the win, we have to I started the game better,” he said.
Solskjaer has coached Man United since December 2018 replacing Jose Mourinho. The Special One in his first season coaching United was able to win the League Cup and Europa League titles.
While the current Solskjaer, as informed Duncan Castles, has gone through a series of 25 failures in the chance to win trophies at three clubs and three different divisions. His last success in winning the trophy was in 2013 at the Norwegian Cup.
Duncan said: “Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United were knocked out of the League Cup at Old Trafford by West Ham United. Solskjaer has been in a streak of 25 unsuccessful attempts to win trophies at three different clubs in three different divisions since his last success, the 2013 Norwegian Cup.
A trophy is missing and Solskjaer is under pressure for a trophy this season after three years in charge. The remaining potential for trophies now lies in the FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League.
