DBasia.news – England national team coach, Gareth Southgate, praised his two players, Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho, after a 5-0 win against Andorra. According to Southgate, both players performed brilliantly.
England won five goals without reply when they visited Andorra on matchday 7 of Group I of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, at the Estadi Nacional Stadium, Sunday (10/10). Ben Chilwell (17′), Bukayo Saka (40′), Tammy Abraham (59′), James Ward-Prowse (79′) and Jack Grealish (86′) scored the five goals for The Three Lions.
Although not on the list of goalscorers, but Phil Foden was still praised by Southgate. The Manchester City player played the full game and created one assist.
“Frankly, Foden is one of the most effective players when played anywhere up front. When playing in a 4-3-3 formation he is a number 10, but with the ability to drop lower and build the game at certain times. As he did tonight. That is fair,” said Southgate as reported by the Guardian.
“He’s also gotten stronger and part of that is the balance of the type of play that’s possible as a number 8.”
“Towards the end of the game there were some beautiful combinations between Foden, Mount, Grealish and Saka. The kind of game our players were able to produce that was really interesting,” said the coach.
In addition to Foden, Southgate also praised Jadon Sancho who packed two assists. Southgate was happy to see Sancho’s struggle to prove himself after previously he slumped at Manchester United.
“It wasn’t easy for the winger tonight to get the ball with two to three tight defenders. You have to choose the right moment to release the ball,” said Southgate.
“I think he’s done very well a few times. Sancho is showing the quality he has and I know that will come at club level as well.”
