The aftermath of Idrissa Gueye’s refusal to wear a rainbow jersey

DBasia.news – Idrissa Gueye, who refused to wear a long-tailed rainbow jersey, was asked to give an explanation after missing the last match of Paris Saint-Germain for refusing to wear a rainbow-style LGBT jersey.

Every team in French Ligue 1 wears a rainbow colored jersey on their match day to mark the 2022 International Day against Homophobia.

Gueye, reportedly on purpose, missed PSG’s game against Montpellier for that reason, and coach Mauricio Pochettino later clarified that the player was sidelined for “personal reasons”.

“This absence [against Montpellier] is widely interpreted as a refusal to participate,” the French Football Federation [FFF] ethics board said in a statement seen by APF.

“One of two things, both hypotheses are unfounded and we invite you to express yourself immediately to silence these rumors.”

“Or the rumors are true. In this case we ask you to be aware of the repercussions of your actions and the serious mistakes that were committed.”

“By refusing to take part in this collective initiative, you are validating discriminatory behavior, and not just against the LGBTQI+ community.”

Gueye has not spoken regarding his actions yet, but Senegal’s president, Macky Sall fully supports the player by sending a message on Twitter.

“I support Idrissa Gana Gueye. His religious beliefs must be respected,” said the Senegalese number one person.
