DBasia.news – UEFA is reportedly working on plans for a new format for Champions League qualification. UEFA will use the club’s success in the previous few seasons as one of the benchmarks for appearing in the Champions League.
The European club association, whose ten members are from the Premier League, hopes to convince European governing bodies that Champions League qualification should be based in part on UEFA’s coefficients. So, position in the standings will not be the only way to play in European competition.
The coefficient in question is the ranking of European clubs based on the results achieved in the last five years where Bayern Munich is currently in the top position.
After Bayern, there are Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea who are in successive positions from second and fourth. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and Manchester United are also in the top 10.
The Guardian reported that the proposed format would see clubs finishing outside of the Champions League spots in the domestic league but qualifying for the Europa League or winning the domestic cup could compete for two tickets to play in Europe’s top flight. To determine it, the coefficient ranking will be used.
The plan is likely to be announced this week when UEFA holds a general assembly in Vienna, Austria. UEFA president, Alexander Caferin, confirmed that the plan would provide more space for the minor and middle leagues.
However, looking further, actually the regulation is more profitable for big clubs that mainly play in top European leagues such as England, Spain, and Italy as the coefficient values of clubs in these leagues are much better than the middle or lower ranking leagues.
As a result, UEFA’s plan has caused controversy. Especially when several elite clubs are preparing for a new competition, the European Super League.
