DBasia.news – Tottenham Hotspur defender, Toby Alderweireld has promised to bring his team back to the Champions League as soon as possible. Spurs are now in the Europa League zone after undergoing an inconsistent season. The 2-1 win over Arsenal has again raised hopes, althought unlikely.
If they lose their place in the top four, it means that Tottenham will not be in the main European club competition for the first time since 2015. Ironically, this happened only 12 months after they reached the final.
Alderweireld had tried to ignore that. He considered, this fact is part of the up and down journey in football. Most importantly, he promised their absence would not be long.
“That’s football. For us right now it hasn’t been great, but I remember back when I came to Spurs (in 2015) and they haven’t won a championship for more than 50 years,” Alderweireld said as quoted by the Daily Mail, Tuesday (7/14).
“Every year we have a chance to qualify so it’s positive that people think we have to be there, and of course we have to be in the Champions League.”
He admitted this season the team has had difficulty in qualifying for the elite competition. However, he said, if the team stays united and works hard to improve themselves, then next season they can return to Champions League qualification.
Despite their inconsistency and the feeling that the team had reached the end of the cycle, the Belgian defender insisted that his team could rise under Jose Mourinho’s control.
“We did not accept our failure this season. But we must be professional about it by ending the season well and then trying to return next season,” concluded Alderweireld.
