DBasia.news – Many have asked why UEFA did not punish Real Madrid who were the originators of the European Super League. Madrid will still appear in the semifinals of the Champions League, a competition under UEFA.
Reported by Marca, legal experts explained that UEFA has no basis for imposing penalties on Real Madrid, or the clubs involved in the European Super League.
Previously, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin issued a threat to directly punish Madrid. In fact, he had given a signal that Madrid would remove Madrid from the semifinals of the Champions League. Although Ceferin recently stated that there was little chance of not playing the semifinal match between Madrid and Chelsea.
The punishment Ceferin refers to is the one to be taken by the UEFA Executive Commission (Exco). Friday (23/4) local time, Exco UEFA was scheduled to hold a meeting with the agenda of determining the European Cup venue. However, before the meeting, the European Super League appeared.
As Marca reports, Exco does not have the power to impose sanctions on Madrid or any other club. The one having the authority is the Disciplinary Commission. But even then it is said to have no strong legal basis. This means that the sentence will be easily overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).
Why is that? Madrid or any other club cannot be punished because no rules were broken. Yes, none of the rules, including the competition rules, were broken. Because in the rules there are no restrictions on making parallel competitions. Even the most recent Champions League rules, which go into effect 2021-24, make no mention of the ban.
