DBasia.news – The chairman of European football’s governing body stated that the current season could be “lost” if it cannot be resumed at the end of June, even though he did not rule out an extension of the competition to next season.
UEFA President, Aleksander Ceferin, told the Italian newspaper, La Republica, that there were a number of options for completing this season, which had stalled throughout Europe due to the corona virus pandemic.
“There are plans A, B and C. These three options would start returning in mid-May, June or late June, if we don’t succeed, then this season is likely to disappear,” he said as quoted by Reuters.
However, he added, “There is also the possibility of starting again next season, beginning after the one held. We will see the best solution for leagues and clubs.”
Ceferin has stated that completing the domestic league is a priority even though it means the match would be held without spectators.
“It’s hard for me to imagine all the matches being played in closed doors, but we still don’t know when we will continue again, with or without spectators.”
“If there are no alternatives, then it is better to finish the competition in any way,” he stated.
“But I can say that I do not want the finals of European club competitions to be played with closed doors.”
Ceferin said the decision to postpone Euro 2020 until next year “shows that every emergency step or our emergency and every club is our club.”
He said that a video conference with representatives of clubs, leagues and players was “a fantastic show of unity and solidarity.”
He also spoke with FIFA and President Gianni Infantino despite recent differences of opinion.
“It is important to forget personal
interests and disagreements,” he stated.
