DBasia.news – One of the biggest difficulties when a club left by the coach or manager for years is the transition. After years succeeded with one big figure, the club could stay at the highest level or conversely.
Manchester United entered the fifth year without Sir Alex Ferguson, the most successful manager of Britain who coached the club for 26 years. He resigned in 2013 and until now, there were 3 managers replacing him: David Moyes, Lois van Gaal, and Jose Mourinho. Ryan Giggs also coached the team with interim status in the middle of 2013/2014 season.
In five years, Man United spent £700M to get the new ammunition, but there were not too many prestigious titles achieved, including the most awaited: Premier League and Champions League. Mourinho also often criticized this season.
Besides criticized for his pragmatic style, Mourinho also criticized due to his failure to build a competitive team after spending £300M since his arrival in 2016.
This unique theory explained by The Red Devils legend, Gary Neville who now becomes the British soccer experts. Mourinho’s difficulty, according to Neville, related closely to Van Gaal’s mistake who coached United during 2014-2016.
Jose Mourinho
“The club have spent £700m since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, it’s a fortune. If you’d have said to me six years ago that Manchester United were the title winners and then would spend £700m in the next few years, I would have said that they would have won multiple titles,” Neville said reported by Squawka.
“It hasn’t gone well, but you’ve got to remember Jose Mourinho has spent a lot of money, but the Louis van Gaal signings I have to say were really poor. So Jose Mourinho has had to get out of the club seven, eight, nine, 10 players, and then get them in. He’s only been here two years, he’s not been here 15 years,” he explained.
Still, according to Neville, Mourinho’s recruits fit the team profile like Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, and Alexis Sanchez, except Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
“So for me, there is still more investment to do to make up for the mistakes in those first three or four seasons. I actually like the signings Jose Mourinho has made, they’re more along the lines of the players I’d like to see at this football club,” Neville concluded.
