DBasia.news – Rooney had previously been in charge of Derby County since 2020, but was sacked in June after the English club were relegated to the third tier.
The Manchester United legend was linked with several clubs, including his boyhood team, Everton. However, that did not happen and Rooney chose to return to MLS and manage DC United.
“DC United today announces that Wayne Rooney has been appointed as the club’s new head coach,” DC United said in a statement.
“Rooney, who previously played and captained the Major League Soccer (MLS) club for 2 years from 2018 to 2019, returns to DC United after 2 years as manager of Derby County as they competed in the Championship.”
“Interim head coach, Chad Ashton will remain at the helm of the team until Wayne Rooney receives his work visa.”
Meanwhile, DC United Co-Chairmen Jason Levien said: “Wayne is a football legend and one of the most exciting and dynamic new managers in the sport. He has already proven in his young coaching career that he knows how to lead a group through adversity.”
Steve Kaplan added: “He has an understanding of our league and what it takes to be successful in MLS thanks to his two-year stay with us as a player.”
“The passion he showed in the Black-Red thrilled our city and our club, and we are excited to welcome him back as our head coach.”
Before retiring as a footballer, Rooney had a career with DC United from 2018 to 2019.
During his time with the MLS club, Rooney recorded 25 goals and 14 assists in 52 matches in various competitions. He was also selected as MLS Best XI in 2018, All-Star in 2019, and MLS MVP finalist in 2018.
