When the Unbeaten Record Does Not Guarantee Winning the Trophy

DBasia.news –  Liverpool has been unbeaten so far in the Premier League. But is there a guarantee for them to win or achieve the trophy at the end of this season? Not necessarily.

Looking back, there are two clubs in Europe that has an unbeaten record the same or longer than Liverpool, but failed to win. The two clubs are Real Sociedad and Perugia.

In the 1978-79 season, Perugia managed to close the Serie A without a defeat. At that time they recorded 11 wins and 19 draws from 30 matches. At the end of the season, Perugia had to settle for second place, which until now was their highest achievement. While the one who achieved the scudetto was AC Milan, the club swallow three defeats on the season.

While Real Sociedad recorded 38 matches without defeat from week 29 of the 1978-79 season to week 32 of 1979-80. Sociedad closed the season with only one defeat in the 1979-80 season, but they had to settle for second place behind Real Madrid, who claimed three defeats.

Even so, Sociedad managed to avenge their disappointment by becoming La Liga champions the following season (1980-81). When they swallowed eight defeats throughout the season.

While in England, Huddersfield Town has recorded 43 League One matches without losing between December 2010 to November 2011. This is the second best in the history of English football. Nevertheless Huddersfield has failed to become champions.
