The Golden Boy Best Young Player Award was launched in 2003. Several media outlets have been panelists to determine who is the best under-21 player.
Media that became panelists in the award besides Tuttosport (Italy) were Bild (Germany), Blick (Switzerland), A Bola (Portugal), l’Equipe, France Football (France), Marca, Mundo Deportivo (Spain), Ta Nea (Spain) Greece), Sport Express (Russia), De Telegraaf (Netherlands), and The Times (United Kingdom).
The first player to win the title was Rafael van der Vaart. While the last edition was won by Matthijs de Ligt who still defended Ajax.
Entering the 2019 edition, the organizers re-released new names. In this edition, there are a total of 20 young players included in the nominee.
