Club Brugge Officially Becomes Belgian League Champion

By db-admin

DBasia.news – Club Brugge was finally named the Belgian League or Jupiler Pro League 2019-2020 champion. Certainty was obtained after the Belgian League Board of Directors officially stopped the competition on Saturday (5/16).

Belgian League actually has intended to stop the competition since early April. The reason was because the conditions in the country made it impossible to hold matches until 30th of June due to the corona virus pandemic.

But the plan was postponed to be approved. That was after UEFA threatened to strike out Belgian club representatives from European competition.

Some time later, Eredivisie and Ligue 1 made the decision to stop the competition. This is what is believed to convince the Belgian League to do the same.

Club Brugge was named champions after finishing top of the table when the competition was suspended in March. They are 15 points ahead of Gent in second place.

With this result, Brugge has won the league title 16 times. They only lost to Anderlecht who became the most trophy collector with a total of 34 pieces.

Brugge also automatically qualifies for the Champions League group phase next season. While Gent must start from the qualifying round.

In addition, Waasland-Beveren, who held the distended position, became the only team that was relegated. As for the successor, it has not been decided because it is still waiting for the final match between OH Leuven and Beerschot-Wilrijk.
